Ironwood Maine Web Update

Today, I would like to tell you about what I am most excited about right now in my Ironwood program!

Over the past several weeks, I have been given the opportunity to participate in an equine internship! What does that mean, you ask?

Throughout the week, I am scheduled to participate in a variety of activities that give me tons of experience managing a barn, opportunities to work with the horses, and lots of time to practice new skills. This internship has motivated me to pursue a career that I am passionate about.

For some residents, an internship program can be incredibly rewarding and a great way to keep engaged after high school and as we near the completion of the Ironwood program. For me, it has been inspiring and allowed me to develop independent skills that will help me get a job. It also sets me up with certain knowledge that not everyone has the opportunity to learn.

There are a lot of things that an internship requires of me. There is text work, online learning, hands-on training, journals, performance assessments, automatizing learning (leadership experiences and observations), and career development. In addition to internship-related tasks, daily work, and community expectations, I stay pretty busy around here.

An internship can be beneficial by teaching skills that will help in the future. I have gotten so much from this opportunity and I do not know where I would be if I had never challenged myself to take on this responsibility. I am quickly realizing I will be able to transfer the skills I am learning here personally and professionally when I go home.

This upper-level resident has taken advantage of this unique experience as he nears his program graduation. There is nothing more rewarding than to see one of our residents become passionate and take pride in their efforts. We look forward to finding more opportunities to enrich each of the residents as they move through their unique programs.
