Yoga Program

Yoga Program The Yoga program is a comprised of three basic elements: breathing and rhythm, body alignment and poses; and mindfulness and relaxation practices. Classes incorporate elements of strength training, dance, and martial arts into a dynamic practice. Sessions are both gentle and challenging, carefully designed to address individual needs. Maria Orlova, who started and teaches the Yoga program, is certified by the International Sivananda Organization since 2003. Her movement arts background includes years of New England– ranked athletics and dance.

Boys and girls groups separately participate in a weekly Yoga class. The seasoned athlete, the individual with a non-traditional movement backgrounds, and the one with little exercise experience whatsoever, will all find something useful here. During their first class, each new student receives an introduction, acquiring the basic vocabulary and movements used throughout the program. They learn deep breathing techniques- necessary not only for athletic, vocal and dance performance, but also for general well-being and relaxation.

The movement itself includes standing and jumping, graceful flow, and mat exercises. Maria demonstrates and elaborates poses with attention to detail and proper alignment. She engages students through dialogue, continually relating classroom movement to other disciplines and life itself. Maria has experience working with physical challenges or limitations. She can support students’ fulfillment of their own chiropractic or medical recommendations. Sometimes she creates an alternate routine for those who need it.

Yoga During the weekly yoga classes, students learn about health through balance. Sessions incorporate deep breathing, strengthening and stretching exercises, relaxation and visualization techniques. Classes are both gentle and challenging, carefully designed to address individual needs. Through modeling and detailed instruction, the teacher helps students develop better posture and alignment. Music, dance and occasional self- massage accent the sessions. Being mindful throughout the practice, students learn to accept their bodies, maintain, and even improve their health. Due to its balancing nature, Yoga is helpful to students with diverse experiences and needs- from those with non-traditional backgrounds and little athletic experience to seasoned athletes.

Maria is certified as Yoga Siromani (Teacher) by the International Sivananda Organization since 2003. Her movement arts background includes years of New England– ranked athletics, and dance.
