The Ironwood Extension Program

The Extension Program was created to continue helping graduated residents practice using the new skills and productive habits of thinking they have acquired while working on their individual programs at Ironwood. The Extension Program will continue to build on these positive patterns and give students opportunities to reinforce these skills by using them in real world situations. All off-campus activities will continue to be supervised by Ironwood staff. All therapeutic services will continue, as well.

The Extension Program will allow students to work on their education. Residents can continue to take high school courses, opt to take online college courses, if they have completed a diploma, or take local adult education/vocational courses (based on timing and availability).

Additionally, there will be opportunities to further develop life skills. Ironwood will provide opportunities for classes in Driver's Education, CPR/First Aid, and Life Guard Certification, through local resources. Other life skills taught may be as simple as learning how to change a tire, balance a checkbook, wrap a present, iron a shirt and/or polish shoes.

Courses for personal enrichment will also be available. Options will include music lessons, art courses (drawing, painting, clay and print making), financial planning/budgeting and culinary art classes. These courses will take place at local organizations or on campus.

Extension Program residents will be required to volunteer no less than 10 hours a month. Local organizations welcome our students to their cause and mentor them in a variety of different practical settings. Volunteering opportunities will be available through the local Church Thrift Store, Theatres, Animal shelters, Libraries, veterinary clinics, museums and Town Resource Officers.

Extension Program students will be permitted the use of a simple phone that will allow students to make and receive calls and texts. Residents will also be allowed to use an Ironwood computer for emails and educationally based research. Technology use will be monitored at all times. Parents, students and therapists will work together to assemble an approved contact list for emails, texts and calls. Not adhering to this list, or any rule violation of technology use, will result in a loss of privileges.

Idle time is very difficult for our graduates to manage, especially those with addiction issues, specifically right after graduating Ironwood. The goal of the Extension Program will be to ease your child back into a mainstream life, by allowing them to gain back the privileges and freedoms they had previous to Ironwood, at a slower pace.

Farm House Supervisor, Darren Labbe, will be managing the Extension Program. Please feel free to email sueh@ironwoodmaine.com if you are interested in this program and/or if you have any questions.
